Ruth (Gamm) Hautman, chalk pastel still life drawing, 18″ x 24″, 1949
Recently I had the opportunity to look through and photograph some of my Grandmother’s drawings from 1949. At that time Ruth Gamm (now Hautman) would have been 23 and was enrolled in a night class. The studies I’m going to be posting are from that course. Most of the drawings are chalk pastel and charcoal but some are pencil sketches and include both still lives and figure studies.
It was funny looking through these drawings and seeing how little introductory subject matter seems to have changed in 50 years; I think I drew this same vase while taking classes at Kent State. I chose these two drawings for the first post due to their vibrancy; even after 60 years the colors are clear and bright. Later this week I’ll post some images of her figure studies.
It’s inspiring to imagine my 23 year old grandma striving to pursue her passions for art even though she was unable to enroll in a full-time art program. She wasn’t yet married in 1949 and drawing from the nude figure probably wasn’t the norm for women of that time. My Grandma turned 86 this year and I hope that I am able to create art for as long as she has.
